The Private Investigator's Legal Manual March 15, 2006 David H. Hessler (Northern California) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This book is a God-send for people who are looking for study material prior to taking the test, for new Private Investigators just entering the profession, and for the experienced Private Investigator who is expanding into a new area of practice. In all my research, this is the only source that explains what a Private Investigator can do and what they can't do, based on case law as well as explaining the liabilities associated with PI work. Well done!
I just passed the P.I. exam July 21, 2008 KathyB. (San Diego, CA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm thankful to the other three who left reviews of this book and said it was helpful for the P.I exam. I studied all the B&P codes, etc., recommended by the licensing board to prep for the exam as well. I found this book gave a great overall view of the P.I. business and its legal considerations. It mentioned the types of agencies and specific agency names where you would be gathering information. It was a well organized book. The second half is all the code sections which would apply to someone doing P.I. work. This book is a confidence builder for those making the transition from law enforcement or other fields, into the P.I. world. Now that I passed the exam I will be keeping it on hand as a valuable reference/ refresher. Good luck to you all.
The Best Book on CA Law For Anyone Interested In The Calif. PI Field July 13, 2009 Priscilla M. Felton 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Plain and simple, if your interested in the legal aspects of Private Investigation in California, this is the bookThe Private Investigator's Legal Manual: (California Edition-Second) for you. This covers just about all of it for the beginner, and a great reference for the advanced. This is a great study guide.
A Must for Those Preparing for the CA PI Exam September 2, 2009 Craig Olsen 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you are preparing to take the California Private Investigators exam, then this book is a must. It breaks down all applicable laws (state and federal) that affect private investigation in California. This is not a dry reprinting of the regulations. David Queen provides examples and intricate details of each section to help clarify what is sometimes very confusing "legal speak". A prime example is the how California views libel and slander - both of which an investigator must be wary. There are subtle exceptions to libel and slander that Queen outlines and provides examples. There are questions on the state exam that I would not have known the answer to without the assistance of this book. The book does contain about 100 or so pages of the legal text as well (certainly there are those who like the dry "legal speak" - so this book will make everyone happy).
Should be required for every investigator July 25, 2010 Shaun Sundahl, Sundahl & Associates, Inc This book is a must for every licensed private investigator (PI). There are many private investigators, however very few are attorneys AND licensed investigators. Mr. Queen draws from his knowledge of the law and applies it to common issues the modern investigator may come across. Every PI should have Mr. Queens book as a practical tool for the trade. Although Mr. Queen's book is intended as a reference for California PIs, PI and PI applicants in other states may find this book practical as some of the laws discussed cover federal rules. The applicable California Business and Professions code, Evidence code, and California Criminal Codes are covered in detail in hypothetical examples.
